Characteristics of Jute
Jute has a number of advantages and notable natural properties that make it unceasingly desirable for commercial use. Jute is being used on a large scale in the production of garments. Its eco - friendly features are displayed in fashion shows across the world. Jute is a feasible option for cost-cutting in garments production in India. When blended with acrylic, rayon, wool, cotton or polypropylene, jute fabric is a much more viable alternative for modern fashion garments. An elaboration of the properties and advantages associated with jute can be summed as follows:
High Tensile and Biodegradable Properties – Jute has high tensile strength and biodegradable properties. Natural assets of jute fibers, apart from its delightfully golden shade, are its biodegradability and its particularly of high tensile strength. To make this characteristic of jute known to the world, National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Institute of Jute Technology joined forces and formed a commercial enterprise. The enterprise launched intensive research on properties of jute to make it commercially viable.
Environmental-friendly Products – Products made of jute are environment-friendly. Though quite rough in its natural state, jute can be easily mixed with other materials and processed to manufacture soft clothing or furnishing items. An example of such a material is JUCO, which is an amalgamation of cotton and jute in different blends for a range of quality weight fabrics that are soft and can be folded as per one's convenience. For its biodegradable properties, jute contributes significantly in preserving the some of the fast depleting natural resources and has proven to be extremely eco-friendly. It is fast replacing polythene bags, which is non-biodegradable, in shopping centres and malls. The National Institute of Research on Jute and Allied Fiber Technology (NIRJAFT) has been making all out effort to make it less rough and much more malleable and soft through the application of innovative techniques of processing jute.
How Jute is Prepared?
Jute is a hard material with strong bond between the inner and outer fibers. The bond is needed to be broken by retting – a process in which bundles of jute is soaked into water for approximately 20 days. This process weakens the pectin, a hard substance that constitutes the bond. Once the pectin dissolves in water, the fibers can be easily separated enabling the long strands to be stripped away from the stalks. The strands, thus obtained, are washed in fresh water and dried for three days on rooftops. Post drying process, the fibers are bundled and sent to mills for further processing. Products We Offer
